Hey guys, first blog post of 2015, and a long one at that, so thanks for sticking around ;) Listening to music from Final Fantasy X as I type this, it is strangely relaxing and is helping me to reflect on the past year for Nicolpops as well as what I hope to achieve this year. As well as being the start of a new year, it is also my birthday tomorrow, so I feel obliged to make this quite a personal post.
This year I want to really push myself with my illustration work, it is what makes me feel most alive when I suddenly become inspired. My drawing reflects me. I plan to go deeper into exploring other forms of media that I have pushed aside since being thrown into the 9-5 way of living. A LOT more illustration work. More painting, traditionally, as well as expanding my skills in digital art. I am going to create new and original Nicolpops work, using my own interests that are of my own concepts and style.
Being a better illustrator will also in turn make my art dolls even better. I want to spend time honoring the real craft of sewing and making, exploring new ways of creating garments and props for my dolls, and create ones that are true to my style, and go hand in hand with my illustrations.
Again with the dolls, I aim to explore new media with perhaps a new range of dolls. I created a Krampus art toy for MrKaiM81 as part of his Christmas present, and I found it so refreshing to be using different materials, and create something I was really excited about.
Sometimes people don’t get it. Why I create. They think this is some sort of hobby. But at the end of the day I deserve happiness. I have the choice to do what I want to do, and I guess true friends will understand that and support me along the way. I want to make something of myself and get out of the 9-5 office life.
As long as I keep working hard it will happen!
I am so lucky to have MrKaiM81 in my life, who inspires me each and every day. I was given these beautiful Mouse Guard books for Christmas, which I love!!! It is one of the most beautifully illustrated comics I have ever read. You can read more about Mouse Guard, and the artist behind it, David Petersen by clicking here.
Lastly, here is the latest illustration I have done. You can tell I was influenced by the mouse guard books, however, I wanted to create an image that was more fantasy based, which is why I chose to make him a wizard. I tried using new techniques for the colour process using Sketchbook Pro, and I am pretty happy with the results!
I am thinking of doing a tutorial on how I created this illustration for a future blog post as I get quite a few people asking about my design processes.
As for my next blog, I am wanting to do a Q&A type of thing, with hopefully creating a FAQ page to my website, so if you have any questions you want to ask me, whether it be about my processes, inspirations, prices, dolls etc, feel free to leave it in the comments, or you can send me a message by contacting me here.
That's all for now. I am away to enjoy my weekend and celebrate being 25!!!! ;)
Various ponderings by me; Nicola Brand: creator of the Nicolpops stitch-punk doll. I dabble with illustration, but my main passion is for knitting, and using mixed media to create one of a kind critters.
